Some practices are built on business models. Georgetown Orthodontics was built on something different — a grandfather who founded it, a father named Thomas who continued it, and Dr. Michael Blackwood who serves it today. Three generations of orthodontic care in this community, and counting.

GENERATION ONE
The Practice Begins.
Dr. Blackwood's grandfather founded Georgetown Orthodontics, establishing orthodontic care in the Washington, DC area when orthodontics was still an emerging specialty. He built a practice on something simple: personal relationships with patients and families, delivered with genuine expertise. That foundation became the practice's identity.
GENERATION TWO
A Family Tradition Continues.
Thomas Blackwood continued the practice his father founded, carrying the family's commitment to orthodontic excellence into the next generation. The practice stayed rooted in the same community, with the same belief that every patient deserves personal attention from someone who genuinely knows them. Thomas built on what his father started — deepening the family's connection to the Georgetown and Palisades neighborhood.
GENERATION THREE · PRESENT
Dr. Michael Blackwood — Carrying It Forward.
Dr. Michael S. Blackwood earned his M.S. in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics from the University of Detroit Mercy — a post-doctoral specialty degree that distinguishes him as an orthodontic specialist, not a general dentist offering orthodontic services. He completed his D.D.S. at the Medical College of Virginia/VCU and his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Washington & Lee University. He has been specializing in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics since 1994 — over 30 years of dedicated practice.
He is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the Mid-Atlantic Society of Orthodontists, and the American Dental Association. He grew up in Potomac, MD — he knows this community because he's part of it.

Dr. Blackwood grew up in Potomac, MD. He and his wife Heidi have two sons. Outside the office, he coaches middle school soccer and lacrosse and enjoys hiking and camping. His roots in this community are the same roots that brought him back to serve it.
